About Hazina Maisha | Author of Girl Meets God
Learn more about Hazina Maisha, the author of Girl Meets God. Her life journey from Brooklyn to Alabama is a powerful story of faith, service, and transformation.

Brooklyn Roots & Community Impact
Hazina Maisha was born and raised in Central Brooklyn on a small but mighty street known as Lefferts Place. Her upbringing was deeply shaped by the intersection of four influential neighborhoods—Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Clinton Hill, and Fort Greene.
Raised by devoted community activists, Hazina grew up in a home where service, justice, and education were non-negotiable values. Her father, founder of The East and a community-based school called Uhuru Sasa Shule, believed in Afrocentric learning and self-determination. Her mother, born in Pendleton, South Carolina, was a bookkeeper, journalist, and editor who instilled resilience and faith.
A Childhood of Purpose and Compassion
In Hazina’s words, “Our home was a refuge.” Women in crisis—facing mental illness or homelessness—often found shelter under her parents’ roof. This early exposure to human struggle and compassion laid the groundwork for Hazina’s empathetic lens on life and spiritual growth.
Alabama, Basketball & a Spiritual Encounter
Despite facing challenges in her academic journey, Hazina’s determination and athletic talent earned her a basketball scholarship to a small Historically Black College in Birmingham, Alabama. There, far from the city’s noise, she encountered something she didn’t expect—God.
The stillness, contrast, and culture shock of the South brought her face-to-face with the question: Who am I, really? In that question, she found grace.
